I said 'be prepared to challenge them' not that you HAD to challenge norms to be a feminist. I think your own biases may be coming into your reading, with your suggestions that I'm saying you must be "counter-culture" to be feminist. I can see th...

Erin,
Thanks for the welcoming comment.

Regarding your questions about education:

I was a Teach For America corps member for two years. Through them I taught in the Mississippi Delta in one of the poorest counties in the country. I spent most of that time believing that --quality teachers, better administrators, more time, community involvement, quality instruction, parental involvement, early literacy experiences, more money (among other things)--would help close the achievement gap and improve education in this country.

Since then I have taught in an urban school district as well, and have become increasingly disillusioned with our current system of education, the bureaucracy, the bullsh**, the de-humanization, domestication...

I have some experience with Montessori education and a little knowledge about experiential education, and my vision would include those things.

Following the child, using the student's experiences and intuition to teach, helping students find their place in the universe, their voice, their good work--is the next step (in my opinion)

I do not think that can be done in the current system. The best education is bought in this country (unfortunately). Montessori (for example) started out as education for the poorest, under-served children. That was her mission.

Now it is mainly for the middle class and elite. There are some public Montessori programs, but none (that I have seen) remain true to the mission.

So I don't have a perfect, easy answer about education. It is complicated (as all things are). I am interested in same sex education (especially for teen girls), adolescent literacy, powerful literacy (check out the book "Literacy With Attitude"), Montessori and experiential education.

I hope that someday all of these things will come together for me, and I will realize what my "good work" will be. Right now I am still searching, hoping I am on the right path.

Hi Erin

Yes that's me with my last - five years ago just this past Friday! Going to post some things on birthing "green". Excited to join feminist housewives - I have a lot of ideas brewing (working on a book) and I would love to get some insight/ideas from women who view caring for their children as a form of feminsim/activism. I look forward to the conversations!

#4 - Quarters

So, on campus, there is a homeless man who stands in one place, everyday, and asks for quarters. He is tall, lean, fairly clean for someone without more than a doorway to sleep in. Personally, he puts me on edge, because he is so forward. I think it has more to do with his direct manner:

"Hey! Long hair! Do you have a quarter?"
" Hey, lezzie, do you have a quarter?"
"Hey, short stuff, do you have a quarter?" I'm sure you get the idea.

Today I talked to him, instead of staring at my feet. He as… Continue

#3 - Red!

I got red peek-a-boo rock star streaks in my hair today! It may not seem like much, but I've had the same hair for five years and it was time to do something. I also got seven inches trimmed. My hair is still long, but now it won't get stuck between the chair and my lower back.

To clarify...

My husband's noticing of said earrings was to note that they were 1) new and 2) not dangerous. They also seemed to be shiny.

My new thing for today, yes, I managed to work one in even during the Birthday Tour madness, was to answer a call from an Unknown number. It turns out that this company had been calling for an Angela Wazzherface, not me. So, maybe that will lessen the tide of junk calls I get every day. The operator on the other end seemed genuinely refreshed by my, I think, rather blandl… Continue

One new thing

I have often said over the past few months that I feel very constricted by my current life. After talking with Emily, it became clear that part of this may be how conservatively I present myself. How weird.

Anyway, she challenged me to try one new thing everyday for a month, even if it is small. I'm going to give it a try.

Today's new thing was wearing earrings for no "reason". I've had pierced ears since two weeks before my 7th birthday, as I convinced my mother I should be able to wear new e… Continue

Get it?

So...I started a new medicine in February. It started off slowly, pushing away the terrors, the over-reaction to random sounds, shadows on the walls. Then the nightmares stopped. I realized about six weeks ago I didn't want to hide under the blankets anymore, didn't want to sleep all day. All nice changes, but nothing that any other medicine hadn't done for me.

About a month ago, I started really wanting to do things again. Not just school or sex, but simple things, like enjoying a warm shower… Continue
